{"BIKE SHOP" - FINAL REVEAL}

Saturday, August 23, 2014

I've finished organizing and decorating the bike shop. Yay! For those who haven't been following, I started organizing my husband Dan's bike shop, which has been a place I havn't dared organize for years. First, I cleared out the clutter. Next, I updated baskets and buckets with just a little bit of paint. Then, I made beer cap magnets one week and created a "wallpaper" by putting Dan's old race numbers on the wall. Today, I'll show you how I finished the room by painting the floor, hanging the bikes and MORE!

I was really excited when it was time to paint the floor. I'm always amazed at how much paint can transform a space. For the bike shop, with the help of my kids, I chose a dark navy blue paint. I wanted a color that made a statement, but was also nuetral.

I am also really pleased with the rugs I picked, which is saying something as it felt like a needle in a haystack. It took me some time to find the right solution for the sizes of rugs I needed since they were non-standard sizes. Of course I could have had custom rugs made, but I just didn't want to spend that much money on a basement hang out. So, I purchased two huge indoor/outdoor rugs at Menards for $14.99 a piece and just cut them up into the sizes I needed. I made two big rugs and one runner all for $30.

Even from the very first swipe of paint on the ground, I knew I was going to love how it would look finished. But before I made my first brush stroke, I spent some time prepping the surface. I vaccumed the floor and wiped it down with a damp cloth before I started painting. This prep, while horrifyingly boring, was an important to ensuring the paint adheres to the floor well.

And, as important as prep is, so is choosing paint designed for the exact surface you will be painting. We used paint designed for use on cement floors. Make sure you spend the money to get the product designed to work best for your space.

 I love how clean the floor looks now!! What an awesome transformation.

Once the floor was done, we had to hang the bikes, hang some pictures, and put all the stuff back into containers or on new shelves or pegs. We hung the bikes using a wall bike holder I purchased from the Container Store. At first my husband was a little skeptical of the wall bike holder, but once everything was set up and the bikes were in place, he was pleased. I was thrilled because it was a HUGE space saver!

There are two main places where all of the "stuff" was organized in the space - a metro rack and on pegs as the workbench.

I love the form and functionality of a metro rack for this space. They are study, adjustable and have a nice masculine look. AND, the organization is working. My husband has been using this space for the last 2 months and has been able to keep the space clean, which is a good sign the organization is working.

Going from top to bottom on the rack ...

  • Top shelf - has tool box on left and white plastic bins on right that hold essential items for a ride so he can easily grab them and go

  • Second shelf - four baskets I transformed with paint and labels! See project here

  • Third & fourth shelf - shoes!

  • Bottom shelf - containers filled with race day and not as often needed items

The second area where the bike stuff was organized and displayed was at the work bench. I painted the peg board grey and stenciled a custom logo on the wall earlier in the project shown here. The peg board looks great in the space and allows for a lot of flexibility to add and remove items.

I used some of Dan's favorite beer glasses to hold miscelaneous stuff that he grabs before a ride or when fixing stuff on a shelf that's right in front. Under the shelf is a small toolcase the holds some of his often grabbed tools.
