{ORGANIZING DAN'S WORKSHOP aka "BIKE SHOP"}
Saturday, May 10, 2014
Let me start by saying I didn't actually plan to organize Dan's work shop. Sure, I've looked at it from time-to-time and have seen areas of improvement, but it's Dan's space. It's been his space for nearly 10 years and I haven't touched a thing ... until I did.
Over the next several posts I will share with you all of the projects my daughter and I did together to transform one man's work shop into a things of manly beauty!

At our house, we call Dan's work shop "The Bike Shop" because my husband has all of his bikes and bike stuff in there. The space is pretty small, is in the corner of the basement and has three main zones:
-
The workbench/tools (pictured above)
-
Bikes (pictured below)
-
Bike Gear (pictured below)
The main organizational challenges of the Bike Shop:
-
The workbench wasn't functional - What's a peg board without any pegs?
-
Tools and clothes were in more than one spot - Metal shelf as closet rod anyone?
-
The bikes - they akwardly hung making accessability to the work bench difficult. How useful is a workbench you can't get to?

The first thing we had to do was clear things out. Since it's my husband's space, he help during the purge. I think even he was suprised by some of the things he found.
Once we had the space cleared, it ws time to paint the workbench - hooray! I chose a dark grey color because I had some on hand (check out organizing paint post to see how I transformed my paint storage!) and it's a nice masculine color.

After we painted the workbench and the pegboard, we got our our blotters out and stenciled! Yes, you read that right ... we stenciled in a man's work shop!!

I was able to customize the stencil online at raodtrafficsigns.com. It was the most durable stencil I've ever seen ... it was made of thick plastic and it was heavy. So heavy I had to get creative on how I'd hold it up on the wall because tape was absolutely not going to work. So, I used a metal peg board shelf holder and it worked out just fine!

What do you think of the stencil? I absolutely LOVE the way it turned out. And so far, Dan's happy too.
MANY more projects to go before this bike shop is finished, but having fun so far. Stay tuned as I share additional projects to transform the space.
