Organizing your spice cabinet can have a very positive impact on your day-to-day life. Being able to see all of your spices quickly makes cooking and baking more efficient. It also makes it more enjoyable because you are not stressed searching for things. What can take your joy to another level is creating a consistent look on all of your spices so they look are as beautiful as they are functional. Opening your cupboard or drawer to a beautiful set of spices is lovely.
There are a variety of ways to organize spices - on a tiered riser in a cabinet, on the back of a door, magnetized to the refrigerator or in a drawer to name a few. Additionally, once you've decided where you'll organize them, you can choose how you'd like to organize them - alphabetically or by amount of use. Below I'll dig a little deeper into my two favorite ways to organize spices.
On a Tiered Riser
When organizing spices on a tiered riser as shown below, I often recommend putting most used items in the front vs. placing them in alphabetical order. The reason for this is even though you can see all of the spices when you look at them, it is more difficult than some of the other options like in the drawer or magnetized to the refrigerator. If you'd like to have them on a tier and alphabetized, then I would recommend putting the label on the lid, if possible.
In a Drawer
Organizing spices in a drawer is my favorite way to organize spices. You can see everything so easily and you can alphabetize to make finding them even easier. There are a few different spice drawer organization systems available to choose from from flat to tiered.
Below are some tips and links to products you might want to consider as you plan to organize your spices.
Organizing Tips
Sort first: Pull all of your spices out of their current space and sort through them. Discard any expired spices or spices that you have realized you don't use that often, if ever. Keep the ones you love to cook and bake with.
Measure before you buy: Always take measurements of the space before you buy any containers for organization.
Designate area for back stock: If you like to buy your spices in bulk, designate a space in the cabinet for the bulk spices so you know where to go when you need to refill the bottles.
